Draw to Scale was created by Russell Whitton, a structural drafter and structural designer with more than 25 years of experience producing and interpreting technical drawings across structural and infrastructure projects.

Technical drafting teaches a simple lesson: dimensions make far more sense when you can see their geometric relationship. A drawing can expose a proportion that feels wrong, clarify which side an angle belongs to and communicate an answer more directly than a column of figures.

Draw to Scale was built around that idea. Instead of returning only a numerical answer, the calculators pair the calculation with a proportionally drawn, dimensioned visual representation wherever practical. Values on many drawings can be edited directly, so the calculation and geometry update together.

Why I built Draw to Scale

Many online calculators do one useful job: accept a few inputs and produce a number. But when the geometry itself is the uncertain part, the number can be difficult to judge. Technical drawings solve that communication problem by placing dimensions where they belong on the shape.

I wanted to combine those approaches—a quick browser calculation with the visual logic of a dimensioned sketch. The tools are intended to help students, drafters, builders, makers, tradespeople, designers and anyone working through a geometry question. They are designed for learning, checking and estimating, not as substitutes for project-specific engineering verification.

How the tools are developed

Each calculator is built around the established geometry or trigonometric relationships for its shape. The drawing uses the same defining inputs, so the proportions and results stay connected. Representative formula tests protect core cases, and named approximations are identified rather than presented as exact results.

Free to use

Every calculator is available without an account or installation. Draw to Scale is intended to be supported by unobtrusive advertising so the tools can remain freely available. Advertising and privacy disclosures are described conditionally and accurately on the Privacy Policy.
